| 内容記述 | This essay analyzes the activities of research planning committees established by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), the non-governmental, non-university organization that almost singlehandedly promoted each discipline of the social sciences, including political science, international relations, and economics/economic history in the United States after World War II. The concrete foci of analysis in this essay are the Committee on Political Behavior, the Committee on Comparative Committee, the Committee on National Security Policy Research, and the Committee on Economic Growth, whose major activities spanned the period between the 1950s and the 1960s. Collectively, the academic social scientists who took part in the activities of these committees believed that the social sciences should strive for “scientific” quality by adopting new methodologies characterized by multi-disciplinarity in their respective discipline. This essay argues that while their scholarly endeavors were not very successful in constructing general propositions or theories that they originally aimed for, their scholarly activities and outputs became instrumental in breaking down the boundaries between traditional disciplines , thereby creating new avenues for scholarly inquiry within and across the respective fields of the social sciences. This is the most important legacy left by these committees established by the SSRC. |
