| 内容記述 | This paper investigates changes in intercultural sensitivity among Japanese students who participated in a one-semester, out-of-class, multicultural co-curricular program. In this program, students engaged in weekly, fixed-pair conversations conducted in Japanese with international students. To measure changes in intercultural sensitivity, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale was administered before and after the program. The changes were significant in emotional comfort and enjoyment in intercultural interactions, communication skills in Japanese with Japanese learners, acceptance of other cultures, self-esteem, and expectations of acceptance from individuals of different cultural backgrounds. These changes were attributed to factors such as a more accurate understanding of their own abilities, enhanced communication skills in Japanese, greater awareness of diverse perspectives regardless of cultural origin, and reduced anxiety in intercultural settings. Additionally, the program, designed based on the contact hypothesis, was found to be effective in improving participants’ Japanese communication skills and deepening their understanding of interpersonal relationships, conversational content, and the cultural backgrounds of their conversation partners. |
