| 内容記述 | The Puerto Rican Poet Luis Palés Matos was one of the most important writers and poets who participated in the 1930s cultural and political movement, but he was not a call embrace Africa and its blackness. In his verses, he placed the mulatto at its center, not lo negro, although he identified African heritage as a constitutive force of island history. Palés’ black poetry was a means to cultivate and construct his cultural paradigm, one that placed Puerto Rico in close contact with the rest of the Caribbean. Palés’s verses sparked controversy and provoked strong criticism from the other island intellectuals. Antonio S. Pedreira, one of the so-called “Generation of 1930”, opposed U.S. assimilationist programs by affirming the traditional heritage of Puerto Rican culture as Hispanic. And he resurrected not only hispanophilia but also institutionalized the jíbaro as an affirmative symbol of Puerto Rican culture. As Godreau states, the concept of “culture” has become the acceptable language for struggling against colonial and racial oppression. On the contrary, Rodríguez Silva states that it is very important to break the “silence” or embody and celebrate real blackness, not a romantic idea from the past. We have to uncover the racialized social formation in Puerto Rico and break free from the paradigms organizing much of the study. |
